Here’s a blog post from a few years ago when I had the pleasure of meeting Zandra in all her pink hair glory…

This Style-Spy met one of my favorite fashion icons, the spectacular Zandra Rhodes, at the prestigious 7° Gallery in Laguna Beach for ArtWalk to coincide with Los Angeles BritWeek. What a smashing experience to see fashionistas sipping cocktails while trying on exquisite Zandra Rhodes dresses. Wearing her creations, dancers swirled to the sounds of “Zandra In The Sky With Diamonds”. Zandra’s dresses are the ultimate dress-up dress and her own lifestyle is as dramatic, glamorous and extrovert as her designs. She is not only creative and extremely accomplished, but the warmest person you will ever meet. It’s as if you have met an old friend…

Zandra has stamped her identity on the international world of fashion with her spectacular pink hair, theatrical makeup and feels personality and jewelry will conquer everything.  In her view character and personality override everything and once you reach a certain maturity, age is not a factor.  A woman could say anything and you would be overwhelmed by her character. Can we have a big round of applause for this kind of thinking ladies?!

One of the new wave of British designers who put London at the forefront of the international fashion scene, her unique use of bold prints, fiercely feminine patterns and theatrical use of color has given her garments a timeless quality that makes them unmistakably Rhodes. Her innovative approach to garment construction can be seen in her use of printed fabric dictating garment shapes, reverse exposed seams and stylistic use of jeweled safety pins and tears during the punk era.

Born 1940 in Kent, UK., she was introduced to fashion by her Fashion Instructor mother, a fitter in Worth, Paris. Interested in Pop Art and Pucci prints, she sold some of her first textiles to Foale and Tuffin. Along with a partner she opened Fulham Road Clothes Shop in Chelsea. Wanting full artistic control over her highly unusual prints, she began to base designs for clothes on the shapes of these fabric prints. She set up her own shop taking her collection to New York where Diana Vreeland featured her garments in American Vogue. She then started selling to Henri Bendel in NY, followed by Sakowitz, Neiman Marcus and Saks.  Zandra headed the new wave of British designers who put London at the forefront of international fashion in the 1970s. Rhodes was Designer of the Year in 1972 and in 1974 Royal Designer for Industry.

She has designed for clients as diverse as Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, Jackie Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor and Freddie Mercury of the rock group “Queen”. She continues to clothe and design for the rich and famous including: HRH Princess Michael of Kent, Debbie Harry, Bianca Jagger, Kylie Minogue, Joan Rivers and the late Isabella Blow. Sarah Jessica Parker dressed up in a Zandra for “Sex and the City”. Her vintage pieces have long been collected by Tom Ford and Anna Sui and have been worn by Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

Rhodes’ garments have a timeless quality making them unmistakably Rhodes’; bold, dynamic, colorful and feminine. Even Helen Mirren was inspired by sporting pink hair at the BAFTA’s! I love a dress that shows womanliness, confidence and power.

Fashion, as we all know, is nothing if not fickle; Heidi Klum reports that fact when she notes on Project Runway, one day you’re in, and the next you’re out!

Let’s raise a glass of bubbly to a lady who has staying power!

To inquire about her creations:

With an Italian background, she cites her Mother and grandmother ( Mamie ) as the major influence of her love for food.  Yes, homemade pasta hung from the clothesline in the kitchen and rolling 100 meat balls for a holiday dinner was the norm.  Raised in Pennsylvania. she spent time in Atlanta, Georgia and ultimately settled along the stunning coast of Laguna Beach, Ca. Self taught in everything, she learned to appreciate the amazing flavors, scents and uses for exotic herbs and spices and applies her knowledge to cooking today. Despite enjoying other creative endeavors like painting, photography and clothing design, she realized she would never love another career the way she loves all the stories surrounding food.  And it's capturing those stories that has not only become her greatest passion but a culinary drug worth passing around!  After all, food is a shared experience and no one better to share it with than the entire world. And thus the Food Stalker was born, utilizing all that passion and her fearlessness to capture even the most impossible stories. It's one thing to write about food, but far more exciting to actually capture it and all those stories that make every scent come to life.  And once she sets out, there's no stopping her, because no one follows that scent better than her---and no telling where she'll end up next.
